Nomakula Roberts, better known as Kuli, inter alia wrote down her version of who and what Coloureds are: “You will always be assured of a large family as many of these girls breed as if Allan Boesak sent them on a mission to increase the coloured race... Of course I miss Cape coloured people. Which other race do you know that is more obsessed with naai masjiene, Oh, and I don’t mean sewing machines. Besides, only in the Cape would you hear somebody screaming out: “Jou ma owe jou hond sex geld!” ”

If ever Coloureds were to refer to any other group in such vulgar, distasting, debasing, utter non-respectful terms, there would be a bloodbath in South Africa. If ever Coloureds would refer or insinuate to any other group as bestiality freaks, the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) together won’t stop a genocide happening. If we would ever be so disrespectful as to make such derogatory remarks of any Black liberation hero, South Africa would die a Coloured death. Under immense pressure from her publisher, Kuli also apologised.

Apologies and retractions of statements are a common thing in South Africa. There should not be problem with anyone making an unneeded mistake in South Africa, as generally a generation or two would for a while still be dealing with the demons of the past that we cannot unseat too easily. But our resolve towards ourselves should be selfless and our resolve to make South Africa work for all its peoples, rather really sacrificial. The type of sanctioning on matters such as related to the above is just plainly too flimsy, too easy and of no consequence to genuinely deter and re-educate such utterances and behaviour. Political resolve has become non-existent. The Church also that was once so vigorous on equality issues also remains too quiet of late.

Such is the perceptions and treatments that Coloureds endure as a minority group in South Africa today. We’ve simply come to be seen in many areas as unwanted and unwelcome children.
